It’s time for annual Session Records reviews. Just a friendly reminder that these annual reviews are required. They can also be very helpful. Some churches in our presbytery were again asked to show their minutes and reviews or lose their tax-exempt status. For example, one church faced a $16,000 tax bill and court costs to fight the county who wanted to take away their tax-exempt status because they could not provide documentation and reviews such as meetings, worship, quarterly sacraments, and corporate filings.
Reviews are not only required by the Book of Order (G-3.0108a), but authorized reviews and records are required by state law and many insurance companies too. Of course, for me, the best reason is to get together with other clerks, share encouragement and fellowship (and maybe learn that we are not in this alone), and just learn from each other.
